As per the photo, we''re currently comparing this projector to the VAVA, both ordered on amazon, mainly because we couldn''t find a side by side comparo. We like this one more and if we send one back it will be the VAVA, most likely.

In terms of size, the CinemaX is slightly larger and the fact that it is black and on visible legs makes it look even more so. But the differences are pretty small overall. Both are quiet / unobtrusive, though the Cinema''x is noticeably quieter, however.

Optoma''s remote has a nice metal feel and you won''t need to worry about batteries because you charge it via micro usb. Both projectors work with an external keyboard (ours has a mouse pad as well, which also works), which comes in handy if you need to type stuff (passwords etc). Optoma''s remote also works as an air mouse, though not something we''ve tested yet. We don''t use Alexa, but if you''re into that sort of thing, the Optoma seems to have more inbuilt functionality and a dedicated app.

Where the Optoma clearly does better is in color accuracy: both out of the box and in terms of customization (some of the VAVA''s options simply don''t work / have no effect on the picture, as noted in a couple of reviews). The images also felt slightly sharper and there seemed to be more options to tweak focus.

Brightness: we thought the VAVA would be brighter (because of the higher stated lumens) but that doesn''t seem to be the case. Optoma''s bright mode appears brighter than VAVA''s, with greater contrast. Which is in line with reviews stating that one producer''s lumens are not equal to anothers'' (some measure at source, others on the screen etc.). Either way, both projectors are plenty bright: we got a 165'''' image in a fairly bright room (five windows and two skylights). Yes you''re likely to get some image distortions if you go that large (our wall, that we''re projecting onto now, is definitely imperfect and we''re waiting for a 150''''+ dedicated UST projector screen) but the image is definitely watchable, and even more so if you''ve got some curtains. At night, with lights off, you''re in your own cinema.

Native apps are not amazing on both, though we could actually get a prime video to play on Optoma but not on the VAVA (where, depending on app, we were either asked to upgrade firefox or told of an unspecified system error). We''re getting a 4k streamer later this week and I think that you''re likely to want one as well. Where the VAVA did a bit better was in terms of casting image from an iphone: which worked nicely out of the box; in contrast Optoma''s dedicated apps (we tried all on the IOS appstore) don''t work with the CinemaX and need fixing / updating (funnily enough, they were able to detect the VAVA projector but not the optoma one; go figure...). We reckon these are teething issues and are hoping for a fix soon. The documentation on the Optoma could also be more comprehensive: e.g. sometimes it goes into PIP mode (showing the picture in the bottom right screen) but it''s not clear how to revert out of that and have a full screen picture - not something the manual even touches on...

Sound quality is comparable, though it''s easier to use the CinemaX as a standalone speaker if you so desire.

Fazit: both projectors are likely to make you happy. The Optoma is slightly more expensive, and it''s clear why: you''re buying from a company with more experience in building projectors, and these differences show through. That said, there''s a feeling that it was released in a bit of a rush (the fact that it became unavailable for over a month after being launched is testament to that) and we hope the software / documentation will catch up soon ;-)

We''ll keep on using both of these for another couple of weeks so might post updates here at a later date.

Worst mistake ever! I will return it. No-set up instructions and they claim it sets itself up. It DOES NOT. I got it and the image was slanted and warped. Called tech support the same day and they told me to figure it out myself and its easy. Well guess what, their Smart Fit, don''t work, It refuses to recognize the image on the screen and the image is warped and crocked. Also Alexa does NOT work with it. Called Allexa support and they said it was an Optoma problem for the skill. BUT WHAT DOES THAT MATTER, WHEN THE IMAGE IS WARPED AND UNEVEN AND THEY REFUSE TO HELP. Bad mistake. If I am doing something wrong, you would think tech support would help you set it up not turn you away. So much for plug and play and easy. The projector is dead center, 14 inches from the wall as instructed. Makes no sense. Don''t fall for this. (P.S. I have owed 2 other projectors so I''m not an armature, although this is my first short throw)
    UPDATE-
I called them back and finally got some help. They blame the warped image in crooked screen on me having a pull down screen instead of a fixed frame they should clearly Mark that. they said the smart fit would not work with the pull-down screen and we''re supposed to send me an email with a link to a different program to fix it. Guess what they never did. They did get the Alexa skill working for me but it only works half the time, day 3 and I get provider does not support that. In addition the HDMI port 3 won''t recognize the PlayStation half the time. and this morning when I manually turned it on because Alexa wouldn''t work even with the PlayStation unplugged I was getting images to plug the HDMI cables in when they''re already plugged in. This thing has all kinds of glitches. and I can''t believe that after speaking to text support a second time and then saying they were going to send me a fix they did not guess I''ll call again today. I don''t recommend this to anyone until they work out these glitches. The image quality can''t be beat and the brightness cam. But it does no good with a warped scream and all these glitches.

This is the 4th Optoma projector I have owned. I have always been very happy with Optoma, so I decided to stick with them when I was shopping for a new 4K projector. The last one I had was the GT5600. It was a great projector with a great 1080p image. The only thing bad I can say about that projector was that no matter how much you tried to focus it, the edges where always a little blurry. I am using an Elite Screens 100" white screen, It is not an ALR/CLR screen, but I use blackout curtains and little to no light in the room, so I didn''t think it was worth the cost of buying a new screen. Even though I am using a "normal" screen, the picture is absolutely amazing. This image is super clear and very bright. The GT5600''s picture was great, but this thing literally looks like having a 100" 4K tv on the wall. Setup was easy, and even though the picture is great right out of the box, I did change a few settings because I''m a little picky. I had the projector all set up by the time my wife got home from work and immediately upon walking in, she was impressed with the picture. That is saying a lot since she normally doesn''t have a care in the world when it comes to audio/visual equipment. The image is so crisp and the colors are so vivid. I could not get over how white the whites were and how true the reds were. They really just pop, it’s amazing. I didn''t use the SmartFit feature, so I can''t comment on how well that works. I have a surround sound system, so I won''t be using the built-in speakers but I did at least try them out. They do get pretty loud, but they have practically no bass at all. They would work great if you could use them as the center channel speaker for your existing sound system, but alas, that is not possible. I have not tried any other 4K Laser UST projector, so I have nothing to compare it too, but in my opinion, you would not be disappointed at all if you choose to buy the P1. This thing is awesome.

Just a few things to note if you purchase from Amazon. 1) Understandably so, the package has to be signed for upon delivery. 2) Due to the price, Amazon has to get verification from your bank before it will ship out the item. Again, I appreciate Amazon taking strides to protect their customers against fraud, I personally just think there should be some kind of an alert about this fact. We were supposed to receive the item on a Thursday, but about mid-day on “delivery” day we got an email from Amazon that our shipping would be delayed. It took a phone call to figure out why, but I was told it was due to the verification process. The process ended up taking almost an additional week. We ended up getting the projector the following Tuesday. The frustrating part was that Amazon had well over a month to get this verified, due to the pre-order, but they didn’t until it was ready to ship out. I get it, but that just frustrating.

Definitely very bright but still not enough to overcome a sunny day coming through the windows. I replaced my old optoma uhd51a with this and its great. I don''t use the built-in speaker so can''t say what the sound quality is like. And really question why Optoma wouldn''t just release a cheaper version without the integrated soundbar because I''m sure most people getting this are investing in a serious home theater setup with a dedicated sound system. I mean, I get the idea that this all-in-one device can provide a modern minimalist clean look when only one device is needed for a home theater, but seeing as how great audio systems are selling, they must know that anyone buying a quality projector wouldn''t be looking for it to also replace their already quality audio systems because no matter how good this thing sounds, it can''t possibly match a dedicated sound system. Anyway, I digress.

    What I care about
    -4k hdr
    -3d capable - yup 3d works great
-perfect projection picture quality with reasonable sharpness all around
-no noticeable lag when playing games on my ps4 (I don''t use any keystone lenshift adjustments etc)
    -no odd picture quality issues
    -quiet
-fits my placement, no more obstruction and no mounting required, distance to the throw is less than 15"
-has a nice grid pattern for helping setups
    -adjustable colors, picture settings etc
-has manual or automatic projection area size adjustments using app
-laser, one bulb life of around 10 years.
-feels like solid construction and it looks nice overall. Definitely doesn''t look like a cheap projector.
-probably the only decent ust 4k projector out there for this price

    Cons:
-projection area adjustments can only be made with phone app
-costly hifi integrated speakers, why? I rather them knock off another $200 from the price than integrated hifi sound or at least give the option.
-the focus adjustments will not entirely make all edges sharp, some corners of the screen are sharper than others and others a bit blurry but I am doing 135" projection and possibly the screen is not entirely level
-Maybe because I''m using a white screen and not an ALR silver screen, but out of the box the colors are way off and most people won''t notice this, but I did and most will too if they are aware (this may depend on screen you''re projecting on). Open your laptop and youtube rgb cmyk color test. Compare those colors on the laptop to whats showing on the optoma projection. You will find that you''ll need to tweak each color to make the overall colors more accurate. I did that and compared to the default settings the scenes and pictures were much more closely matching what it should look like, although still not perfect. Everyone should calibrate if possible to maximize their enjoyment of this projector, but yes, it is time consuming. However it is a one-time calibration. Out of the box is just way too inaccurate, at least for me.
-the projector is massive. It will take up an entire coffee table
-ultra short throws in general are very picky with its surfaces, so unless you have a place for a perfectly flat screen and are willing to spend at least a few hundred purchasing a screen I wouldn''t get one because every minor flaw showing up on the screen will be just too annoying to enjoy. Don''t spend over $3k to project on a flawed surface, it''s just not worth it. I projected my old optoma uhd51a onto a textured wall and the picture quality was fine for years, no flaws noticed, but with this UST projector, I saw every bump on the wall and every crease on screens. I ended spending a few hundred more buying a screen.
-the projection height is pretty much fixed, so aligning the screen and placement is still crucial. In some ways even less flexible than straight throws.
-this thing is pretty heavy for a projector, 25 lbs.
-no dolby vision support (for the price and how recent the product is it should support all the latest formats)
-best price in its class but still relatively expensive, optima should focus on image and not try to integrate things like a hifi sound bar that ultimately bumps up the price and most likely will go unused by most customers

I spent over $4000 on this for the top of the class quality projector which broke after 2 weeks of use. Optoma technician said it could be a reciever problem and recommend return it to seller. I tried to return the product but seller charges 15% restocking fee(thats $600) for not having the original box. I have everything that came with it but did not keep the large brown amazon box. And seller is charging $600 for it. What a joke. My only option now is to ship the projector to Optoma and go through their repair process which may take several months and they could charge me for labor and shpping if its not covered under their policy. I checked return policy before purchase because it is a very expensive product. They didnt specify anything about restocking fee. If I knew I wouldve kept the box.

DO NOT TRUST AMAZON. They dont have great customer service

    Short review on projector:

I only used this projector for 2 week and I do not recommend this pojector. It does not worth $4000. Video quality and sound are okay but other projectors can do the same job at much lower price. Also their app sucks. Netflix, Amazon, prime viedo always crash and internet browser is super slow I had to connect my computer thru HDMI to watch anything. Not what I expected from $4000 projector.

I have waited two years for an Ultra Short Throw projector that I would be happy with investing in. I was going to cave in to a TV, but I am glad I didnt. This is one awesome piece of equipment.

The sound is incredible. I have yet to test it extensively, but it does get quite loud but does not vibrate the media console. The only downside I could think about is the remote in this aspect. It is slow in changing the volume. If you pair the projector to your phone, it is much better at switching from 70 to 30 or vice versa. If what you are watching is loud, voice control seems silly as you are screaming at Alexa to lower the volume. Best bet would be to use the phone.

The picture quality is superb. It is clear and crisp and everyone who has seen it is floored with how good it looks especially with a projector close to the wall. This machine has up to 3000 ANSI Lumens, which does fairly well at late morning or late afternoon. I have the projector in my living room next to a bay window (with a UV filter and non-blackout curtains) and when the sun hits the windows (afternoons), it basically washes the picture out. Mind you, I do not have a dedicated screen yet because I cant decide on an UST ALR projection screen. So right now, it is projecting on the wall. At night, it is magnificent. When it is cloudy, it still does really well.

My issue with the screen right now is the distortion. There is one portion on the upper line that is not entirely straight. I tried two different walls and there is a clear dip. I tried their on-board distortion fixing software. It is not shown when I am watching something, but it is noticeable because I keep staring at it. I am a bit of a perfectionist so I am not sure if it is a defect or natural for a UST projector.

The UI for this projector is not great. In fact, I do not depend on it. Instead, I use either a Chromecast or Roku to stream content via HDMI to watch and that has worked well.

As for the voice command, I have not been able to use it with Google because the software is missing to connect it through Google Home. Instead, I am forced to use Alexa Skills as that software/skill is available. I am not entirely sure why, but the Optoma platform/software is missing in connecting the projector to Google Home. Perhaps it was either taken away or it hasn''t seamlessly connected yet. But, Alexa with the projector is doing well.

I have watched several action films (Avengers and John Wick) so far and I have been on the look out for a color wheel issue. I do not see an issue as of yet. Perhaps, I would need to keep looking for it. But, its a good thing that I have not encountered it.

It is a hefty piece of equipment and it is solidly built. There are plenty of uses for it with music streaming with Spotify and various connections for movies/gaming.

The package came in a big box housing the main box. I dont know why, but the big box is fine, but the main box had a punctured hole. Luckily, there was thick corner foams on each side, so the punctured part never physically damaged the unit. I was scared that it was damaged after waiting so long for this unit to arrive.

I converted a windowless room in my basement as my new home theater. I wanted an 11 foot wide screen which basically filled one wall end to end. I found the restrictions in my room required be to use an Ultra Short Throw projector Because people and chairs would get in the way with a normal throw projector.
I also wanted 3D since I have plenty of 3D movies and have a hobby making 3D family pictures and movies with a 3D camera.
4K was not a must have because most of my movies are 1080P and I did not want to give up 3D.
When I can across this Optoma CinemaX P1 projector I was stunned. It was 4K and supported 3D, was laser, and bright. Optoma claims/supports max 120" screen.
Because I am using a very large fixed 150" screen I have the projector 1" off the floor and around 3 feet away from the wall and screen.
    The Good:
I successfully fill my 150" screen, movies are around 11 feet wide. :)
The projector is bright and perfect for my dark room.
The projector has a Youtube and Plex built in, I use both.
Has a frame smoothing/interpolation function that works well.
4K looks great even at my extreme screen size.
    HDR
Laser, verses a bulb, lasts a long time.
3D works well, I am using DLP sync glasses
I was able to get the picture pretty square without using the digital keying.
Built in speaker is good, but I am using a 7.1 receiver for movies.
    3 HDMI inputs!
Digital Key stoning if needed pretty simple to use plus you can use phone app to automatically do it.
    2 USB inputs!
    Rechargeable backlit remote control!
The picture is great. I am very happy with it.
    Powers up pretty quickly.
Quiet. The fans are very quiet.

    The Bad:
I am sensitive to the "Rainbow" effect and I do see it in this projector. DLP with color wheels have this. Most people do not see it. It is not terrible but I prefer that I could not see it.
The remote back light shuts off quickly.
Ultra short throw projectors are tricky to align to screen because of how they work.
Sometimes the projector takes a while to switch screen modes or gets stuck and I switch off the source and back to the source to get the screen to be proper. 3D and HDR modes is where I have run into this.
You need to have the right screen, no pull down screens. The screen or wall has to be perfectly flat.
Utra Short Throw projectors are projected at the screen at an angle and will show bumps in wall more than a regular projector. I purchased a Fixed 150" screen so I could have a good flat surface to project on to.
You may need to have to buy a special screen for Ulta Short Throw projectors if you are in a bright room. That have screens that do not reflect ambient light to the projector will be bright in a bright room.
Price, Ultra Short Throw projectors cost more that regular projectors.

This projector is a big investment and Optoma makes plenty of good regular 4K projectors that are cheaper, but you have to have the unobstructed space to have the projector to make the picture size and brightness you need.
This projector can act as replacement to a TV and not need all the space for a reasonable picture size.

Overall I am very happy with this projector. Watching movies now is like being in the Theater. The 4K picture is excellent. Movies look great. The 3D looks great. This projector does exactly what I needed.

I''ve had three projectors (Epson, Sony and JVC) over the years and with a move to a new house I decided to go with a 4k projector. One of the criteria I had was for an ultra short throw projector. This projector was previewed on a few home theater sites and got my attention very early on. After a lot of reading and watching promotional and preview videos, I decided to go for it and ordered it. It arrived in two days and the adventure began that night when I got home. Setup couldn''t be easier. Everything is detailed out perfectly and the height template takes the guesswork out of that part of the configuration. The image adjustment couldn''t be easier and the available app makes it practically idiot-proof. The quality of this projector can''t easily be described but suffice it to say everything so far has been outstanding. Build quality: top notch. Image quality: as close to perfection as my 46 year-old eyes can see. Audio: unbelievable, but I will add for completeness that I run the audio through a 7.1.4 audio system. I ran the built in speaker initially just to see what it sounds like and for those of you that do not have a dedicated separate audio system, you will not be disappointed with what the P1 brings to the table. In closing, this projector far exceeded my expectations. If you are thinking about a 4K UST projector, I really don''t think you could go wrong with this one.

There are a lot of options to adapt the picture to your taste : color, brightness, geometry correction with up to 9x9 points. The HDR quality is amazing and I seriously didn''t think I would see so many details on such a huge size of picture, but I''m seriously impressed. The sound is also very good, but I''m going to keep using my home theater since there''s no 5.1 emulation and having such a nice image deserves a matching amazing sound.
