This speaker is capable of excellent, LOUD, clean sound!

I like to play hi-res audio files. There are certain bluetooth codecs, such as aptX, that support the transfer of large amounts of data needed for hi-res (you still don''t get true hi-res but it''s better than basic bluetooth). This speaker uses the lowest level codec and to my ear, bluetooth mode sounds pretty weak.

The speaker does support full hi-res (up to 24 bit-192kh), when connected via USB to a computer. In that mode, it sounds fantastic.

I actually bought two of them and was planning to run them over wifi, in stereo, via the DTS Play-Fi app. It turns out that wifi / Play-Fi was supported only on the original Three, not the Three II. Klipsch seemed to go out of their way to obscure this fact (normally you get new features, not simply lose existing ones w/ the 2.0 version). I was way bummed but a found a good solution.

I''m running the two speakers, in stereo, via a wifi preamp (Yamaha WCX-50), using the RCA connectors (pro tip: go with subwoofer cables-- they are longer and shield noise better). Even though technically I''m using only half of each speaker and I can''t get full hi-res, the sound is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! This setup results in the best sounding stereo I''ve ever owned and I''ve owned a lot.

I even went so far as to buy a third one to use as both my computer speakers and my tv soundbar. The computer and tv are near each other so I use USB for the computer and RCA from the tv.

PROS: 1) Looks awesome. I prefer the walnut finish (the ebony is a finger grease magnet). 2) Sounds great over USB and RCA. 3) Even with no wifi option, lots of versatility. I love the fact that it has a grounded turntable option even though I don''t own a turntable.
CONS: 1) Wifi went missing from previous version. 2) Substandard bluetooth codec. 3) One of my speakers powers off after it''s idle for awhile; the other doesn''t. Not sure which one is behaving correctly.

EDIT: I upgraded the WXC-50 to an Arcam rPlay and now it sounds even better-- pure musical bliss!!

Let me start here: Growing up in the middle part of the 1970s, I became enamored (no, totally infatuated) with stereo equipment. I read Stereo Review, but I loved Audiophile (the magazine/miniature book that found sonic differences between various gold (yes, real gold) stereo cables that cost as much as some decent used cars). Of course, my love was unrequited, because I could not possibly afford even the cables that Audiophile dismissed as inferior.

And then I saw Klipsch speakers, with the fabulous Klipschorn tweeters, each of which was larger than a console television. Yes, I had starved myself enough to buy a Teac cassette tape deck with Dolby noise reduction, and you really could hear the difference in tape hiss when the Dolby button was in the "on" position. (And for those of you who now associate Dolby with outstanding cinematic sound, remember that its humble roots were grown by suppressing tape hiss in cassette tape players.) And I had compromised for a Marantz integrated amplifier (or receiver) and Altec speakers, all cabled together with just decent wiring (with 24k gold plating on the connectors). But oh how I wanted a pair of those incredible Klipsch speakers.

Time for another brief history lesson: a pair of those marvelous Klipschorn speakers cost slightly under $2k. Remember, this was around 1975 or so, and $2k could buy you a fairly decent NEW car. Once again, Satan was fiddling madly and the fates were aligned against me - how could I spend $2k on speakers when I was earning $5/hour? I was mesmerized by great stereo equipment. But I had a $200 cassette player, a $300 integrated amplifier (ok - a receiver) and $200 speakers. My entire stereo system cost about 35% of a pair of those beautiful and alluring Klipsch speakers.

Now fast forward to 2020. I am older, maybe a bit wiser and while not affluent, I am relatively comfortable. And I see this marvelous, retro-looking Klipsch speaker available for my various forms of listening to music. (And for those of you who have had the patience to read this review and are wondering, yes I have a turntable and vinyl records.) So I immediately buy the Klipsch speaker and, when it arrives, I am like a 5-year-old on Christmas morning. I was just so excited and, in a strange way, fulfilled.

Time to listen to the sound. Despite my ongoing fascination with Klipsch, I am able to give an honest review. The speaker is absolutely, inarguably and completely fantastic!!! Klipsch builds speakers with care, and while some may carp about minor things, it is the sound that is so crisp. No one can talk me out of it: this speaker is the best that you will find at price points up to $650. Buy it; you won''t regret it.

I purchased this speaker to play music in my home office, and wanted it to connect to Spotify through my Amazon Echo so I didn''t tie up my laptop which isn''t always hooked up. It works wonderfully for this purpose, with one major disappointment - bluetooth. Despite both the Echo devices and this Klipsh "the Three ii" supporting bluetooth, both of them expect the other device to do the pairing. This means that I can put both devices in pairing mode, but both are ''passive'' bluetooth devices and thus can''t connect to each other.

I''ve settled for running a 16'' long 3.5mm Y-cable to the left and right speaker ports on "the Three ii", running it under my baseboards along the wall to hide the cable. This works acceptably well, and probably gives better overall speaker quality, but it was a small inconvenience I didn''t expect considering that both this speaker and the device I want to connect to support Bluetooth.

If you''re looking at The Three, you''re probably intrigued by the looks and our experience so far is that the sound quality is right in line with most quality mono speakers. First off, it looks just as good in person as it does in the photos. 5/5 for design and build quality, it looks fantastic in our modern home. If you are shopping for looks, rest assured that the sound is good and you can stop reading right here.

    Getting a bit more involved:
This is a basic Bluetooth connection setup with the pluses and minuses associated with such. Flip the switch "on" and it''s pretty much ready to go. Only weird thing is that the sound knob works independently of your source volume, kind of old-school. So you can make adjustments to volume on your phone but I find there''s a balance you need to find so there''s not any background hiss from turning up either the source or the speaker too much.

For sound quality, while it sounds quite good in a bedroom or small space, the mids are a bit weak and washed out so it''s not going to fill a big space without getting boomy. But that''s true of virtually every small/midsized mono-speaker so I can''t fault it too much. Bass is a bit heavy even tuned with an iphone EQ, also typical of this type of speaker. Overall, it sounds about the same as most $200 speakers but you pay a premium for the design and build quality.

For comparison, let me first say that there''s no substitute for stereo pairs. The Three fills a room pretty well but isn''t going to create a wide soundstage like a stereo pair of speakers does. We have a pair of Sonos 1''s in our kitchen and individually The Three sounds better but against a stereo pair it can''t compete. For us, this is the perfect speaker for our bedroom and we will leave the "heavy lifting" for our HiFi system, hidden stereo needs for the Sonos and appreciate The Three for what it is: a beautiful and compact speaker that sounds really good.

You need to adjust your expectations. This is a bluetooth speaker. My ears are used to a pair of Klipsch Heresy I speakers connected to a vintage 30 watt all tube amp. This is NOT that lol but it is something for a blue tooth speaker. If you like real Klipsch horn speakers, this won''t sound familiar. No horns here. If you are getting into better sounding equipment or want to check out vinyl, this is a great solution.
    Pros
-Problem solver- This is my music streamer in the office, spin some vinyl on it and serves as our TV speaker. I can even increase the volume from other rooms with the remote. Very easy and simple.
-Build quality is great. I like my gear made well. For something new and the price, this is well made. Grill material is a thick heavy weave. The wood top/bottom is nice. The knobs are spun alum, stepped turns and the on/off has a nice click on/off
-Connections- Wifi is easy to connect, aux jack works great for the TV, phono connection is nice.
-Size/weight- This is not big, pleased with the size. Would have been dissatisfied with anything less (the one). Weight is solid. Good thing for audio.
-Sound- Its good. I am used to a full sounding, horned klipsch speakers. This is not that, but for a bluetooth, it sounds good.
-VINYL- Not enough reviews mentioning the phono stage. It is the BEST feature. I was skeptical streaming music/jazz radio. When I hooked up my little Dual with a vintage cartridge...WOW not audiophile grade but it is a ton of fun...what vinyl should be. Get an old mono Stones album like 12x5 and crank it.

    Cons-
Boomy-Sound is a little boomy at times, an eq would help but it is not that big of a deal. I think the boomy sound helps with the vinyl though.
Made in China- Just be aware. I get it, it is not 1965 anymore, but be aware of this fact.

Overall, it looks great, sounds great, connects to just about everything and is fun. It is something I am happy to have in my house and find myself admiring and look forward to listen too. That is a good thing for quality audio, it looks good and you look forward to turning it on and cranking it. It is not going to take you to the place where a high quality vintage Klipsch horn speaker will, but it is still fun and the best sounding, connecting and looking bluetooth speaker on the market.

If you are a Klipsch fan, and you know what the discontinued KMC 3 sounds like, you will be somewhat disappointed with this box. When you look at the specs, and you know how Klipsch names things, you might expect that this is the KMC 3 repackaged and with input choices instead of a battery option.

Well, it sorta is, but the sound is not as good overall as the KMC 3 is, and its nearly double the price. Worse yet, where you could control the volume from whatever source device you used on the KMC 3, the volume control on " The 3 Mk.II" is only on the unit itself or by the remote control. (Meaning that if you Bluetooth your phone, you can''t turn the volume up or down on your phone - you have to use the Klipsch remote or manually turn the knob on top.)

This is a huge disappointment, and bang for the buck is NOWHERE near the KMC 3.

However, this does have good sound. The bass response will be influenced by where you set it in a room like any other comparable desktop speaker, and the further away you are from it, the more you hear the bass. And... it definitely can thump when it''s placed in the right environment. It just has a bit too much mid with horrible bass acoustics when you are less than 8 feet away from it.

It is a beautiful looking enclosure - very classy, and I''d say it sounds better that the Bose, JBL, and other pricier contemporaries, but as I said - it''s not as good overall as it''s discontinued brother from five years ago.

I was disappointed when I pulled it out of the box and found that the grill material is plastic, from pictures I thought it was going to be the old school fabric that used to be on console stereo''s and television cabinets. I was looking forward to a cool vintage fabric cover. I bought the black colored one maybe the tan is actual fabric, not sure.

I can hear something floating around inside of the unit, sounds a like a screw or something that came loose and is bouncing around, haven''t decided if I am going to disassemble to figure out what it is, or maybe just send it back.

For something that claims 120W, and has a 100W AC power rating stamped on it I expected it to be a little bit heavier physically. It has decent power for what it is but a far far cry from what a true 100W power amplifier is capable of. They did a good job of tuning the amp output and matching the speakers because I cannot detect any distortion at "full blast". Again "full blast" is not anything like true 100W power amplifiers on decent speakers.

I measured 86dbc with slow response from approximately 10ft away using program music at "full blast". The specs claim 106db @ .5m. The difference between 86db and 106db output is hundreds (even thousands) of watts. It doesn''t make much of a difference for it''s intended purpose, 86dbc of output is enough to hear it in any room of my small house. 106db would be enough to drown out my singing in either shower of my small house, just annoying what manufactures claim and what they actually produce.

Doesn''t fill the room like the Bose Soundlink Mini II, the sound field is narrow and you need to be solidly on axis for good clarity. With the Bose Soundlink Mini II sometimes I have to pause and look around the room to see where the sound is coming from, not with this Klipsch, the top end is very directional. Size and cost of the Klipsch vs Bose I expected a bit more out of it.

Bass response is impressive but also may be what hinders it from a having a clean crisp sound, it comes across as somewhat muddy trying too hard to have good bass response. Room placement noticeably changes the overall tone, so try different locations.

As time went on and I stopped listening so critically and allowed it to fade into the background as casual listening to some old favorites it grew on me and I noticed a good reproduction of some of the subtilties lost on cheaper speakers. Effects on vocals, nice guitar riffs, or a snappy snare drum can be heard easily. At mid-to-high listening levels the clarity drops off unlike some speakers that require a higher listening level to really open up.

Overall the biggest disappointment was when I connected it to my Samsung S9 via Bluetooth and realized I can''t turn the volume up and down using the volume controls on my phone. My other Bluetooth devices have the volume controlled via buttons on my phone but not this speaker. I have to have the remote control sitting next to my phone, and the phone is IR so it has to be pointed at the speaker to use it.

For a lot of people this probably is an excellent speaker, maybe I just expect too much for the size and price point. The lack of remote volume control and the piece of plastic/metal that is rattling around inside might be enough for me to send it back and try something else.

We were just blessed with our first Grandson back in MN but because of the whole "Pandemic" thing, we are not able to travel to visit him yet from our home in AZ. That will not stop our getting good quality music to him though! We purchased the Klipsch The Three II Table Top Stereo Speaker (Walnut) and had it sent to our house first so we could make sure it is what we wanted to send to my Son and D-I-L for a music system for the nursery. When it was delivered to our house, we unboxed (the very well packaged) unit and had no problem connecting our Ipad and our Iphones with no issues. After listening for a weekend, I give this unit a 10!!! The Klipsch engineers have outdone themselves on creating a bookshelf system that sounds as good as my Bose L1 line array system for playing music in a MUCH more compact size! Pretty sure I will be ordering another for my personal use soon! The design is beautiful to look at and even better when you close your eyes and listen to the sound it produces. Well worth every penny!

The bass does not boom like Bose units and the trebles are nice and crisp. Straight out of the box the tone is very nicely balanced. I have tried several music types and all sound as they should. My standard sound check (from CDs): - Vivaldi - Sacred Choral Music, Pink Floyd - Time, Robert Michaels - Cafe Allegro and Django Reinhardt - Minor Swing. I have not tried the Bluetooth yet but when I do I would only rate it on connect-ability as sound quality through Bluetooth is not as good on any device (having said that my old ears probably will not be able to tell the difference much longer) I highly recommend this unit, it sound fantastic and looks great too, just like an old radio.
