Description

Product Description

The bestselling star of NO, DAVID! turns Christmas traditions upside down with laugh-aloud humor.

Readers of all ages will vividly remember trying to peek at hidden gift packages; writing scrolls of wish lists to Santa; and struggling to behave at formal Christmas dinner parties. Always in the background, we know Santa Claus is watching, soon to decide if David deserves a shiny new fire truck or a lump of coal under the tree. From playing with delicate ornaments to standing in an endlessly long line for Santa, here are common Christmas activities--but with David''s naughty trimmings. A surefire hit that is destined to be an annual classic.

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1–Christmas gives more opportunities to admonish the irrepressible David in this familiar story that nonetheless feels fresh with the added holiday trappings. Temptations abound as the beloved rascal attempts to track down hidden presents, snitches cookies, presents his lengthy wish list to Santa, and stays up late with his face pressed up against the window on Christmas Eve. Cheekier moments include a recurring scene from the first book of David heading for the horizon clad only in a winter hat, mittens, and boots, and his name written in telltale yellow letters in the snow. Emotions are easily conveyed, from David''s hyper anticipation, to his very real fear that maybe his behavior makes him unworthy of Santa''s attention, to the comforting and blissful endpage. From Booklist

Christmas comes to the David series in the form of new temptations for this lovable wild child. But the pleasures of trying to peek at presents and snitch cookies are tempered by the discomfort of a formal holiday dinner and the nightmarish fear of receiving a lump of coal from Santa. The pithy text is hilariously illustrated in dramatically composed, richly colorful illustrations. Echoing No, David! (1998), Shannon even re-creates the memorable summer scene of naked David leaping joyfully down the sidewalk, this time comically clad in just boots, mittens, and a knitted cap. An unusually funny read-aloud for Christmas. Preschool-Grade 1. --Carolyn Phelan

We purchased this book b/c my 16 months class read this book daily around the holidays and he loved it. He loves this book so much, we actually had to put it away b/c we were reading it multiple times an hour- lol it says the words "No David" often throughout the book and so our son would walk around the house saying "No David"... It got to the point that whenever he did something he knew was wrong, he would say "No David". I would correct him and say, "No, (insert name)" and he would just keep saying "NO David". fast forward months later, He still walks around the house saying "No david". The book is great, but think we are over david right now- lol

It’s a ways for us to show how David’s actions are bad and he learns not to do them through this book which has been extremely helpful. We even bring up things like “uh oh David tries to steal cookies” when he is trying to and it makes him stop haha. I love these book series.

I originally heard about this book last year from my son''s teacher who described my son''s excitement when this book was read in class. He is a very active child who gets into a bit of trouble, so he could totally relate to the mischief David made in this book. It''s an easy read, and you won''t find yourself getting bored while reading it, which is a nice bonus in any children''s book. At least one of the pages is slightly tongue-in-cheek when David pees his name into the snow, so if that''s what you consider inappropriate, then skip this one. My boy laughs his way through the book while I''m reading and likes to have it read to him every night at story time.
Get it, you and your child(ren) will enjoy this quick read.

David Shannon is a genius. As a Kindergarten teacher, my kiddos are always engaged with his materials and enjoy reading the books over and over again. It''s Christmas, David is quite similar to No, David, but the class found it to be enjoyable for exactly that reason. It''s familiar but introduces new concepts. By the end of the holiday season, our class has usually committed it to memory.

You''ll either love David or Hate him - there are no in betweens with this character who stars in a number of books. Some reviewers have described David as frightening with his small black eyes and large sharp teeth. Others feel he would be a bad influence on their children. One reviewer was unhappy that after a day of misbehaviour, David is rewarded with a hug in the original story. These books are completely unique. I have never found any other books even remotely like these. I love the David Books though, and so do my sons. My oldest (age 6) says they were the very best of his picture books, and his favourites until James Bond. Even though he is rapidly outgrowing picture books, he still enjoys these, despite the fact that we read them almost every night. My youngest son says the No David books are the best books in the world. The oldest, at age 6 can read the very large black crayon type print with ease. At three, my youngest obviously can not read this, but he can recite it word for, only stumbling on one page with an exceptionally long text. Most of the pages have only one simple sentence, which is very clearly illustrated by the drawings, so this book is ideal for those just learning to read. "It''s Christmas David" is the latest addition to our David collection. In this book, it is Christmastime, and while David seems to be a good hearted child, he is just one of those kids who is always in trouble. The cover depicts him knocking down the Christmas tree as he reaches for a candy cane. The first page begins " At Christmastime everyone said '' No David !'' ". Each of the following sets of two pages depicts David doing something he should not - from trying to peek at his gifts and get into the Christmas cookies early to running down the street in his boots, mittens and a woolen hat - but nothing else! David writes his name in the snow - making large yellow letters, breaks a window in a snowball fight and causes general havoc where ever he goes. Will he be on Santa''s Naughty list? Will he end up with a stocking full of coal? I think these books are wonderful for making children fall in love with reading. The books are completely unique and will have a wide range of appeal - what child doesn''t secretly enjoy watching some one else be very naughty? But they will especially appeal to boys who are turned off by the overly sugary sweet fare so often offered to children. Of course there is a place for lovely gentle stories - but I believe there is also a place for wild, irreverent, even subversive, and hysterically funny books. Perhaps these books do set a bad example, but the children always recognise the behaviour as naughty, and it is not malicious. All children misbehave at times ( and very much want to at others). I think it is fair enough to show that even when children make mistakes - they are always loved and valued, and I think this book does just that. I think it is healthy for children to understand that occasional misbehaviour is part of childhood. No child should be expected to be perfect. Everyone does things they should not at times - and that includes grownups! I also think, from an adult point view, this can help us remember to see the humour in such situations, as well as remember how we would have felt as a child. David has an irrepressible energy and is the type of boy that drives parents to their wits end - but he is also full of life and energy - and sometimes we forget what it is like to be so young and full of curiosity. This is a book that will have children even stitches, but even adults will be hard pressed not to have a small laugh or two. It is a wonderful change of pace from the ordinary reading material presented to children and I can not recommend it highly enough. All the same if the idea of a book full of misbehaviour makes you cringe - you''d be well advised to avoid this one.

My family absolutely loves everything David. The story is simple but reflects the powerlessness that kids can feel at constantly waiting, not being allowed to touch, dressing in dressy clothes, and, of course, encountering a constant refrain of "no". Because lets be honest, even the best parents have to say "No" sometimes. All of this is portrayed using David''s usual mix of innocent mischief as he encounters cookies, presents, the mall santa, and family dinners. For our family, this has become a fun and silly holiday classic. I love how excited my children get when we open the Christmas box and their eyes settle on David after a long year of waiting.
