From the Publisher

Introduction

Tulips are cup-shaped flowers. They have six petal-like structures, but only three of the structures are true petals. Tulips are composed of three outer sepals, which were the outer cover of the bud, and three inner petals, which are true petals. Knowing botanical structure helps create scientifically accurate illustration, because the two parts may have slightly different coloration, shape, and texture.

Step 1

With bullet-pointed 2H or H pencil, measure the outer dimensions of the tulip and draw a rectangle. Then measure the tips of three sepals and connect them in a triangle. Do the same with three inner petals. By examining the angles and crossings of the triangles, confirm whether their placements are correct or not. Now, sketch in the sepals and petals focusing on accurate position and proportion.

Step 2

With a pointed 2H, and using substantial pressure, draw a detailed shape of each part. For foreshortened shapes, add some shadow early on, which helps to better show the form. Carefully observe any tiny vein lines and their direction on the petals and sepals and mark them. They will make the curves look organic and realistic. After the final lines are drawn, erase the initial lines.

Step 3

Trace the drawing onto good-quality paper if necessary. Now, add shadow on the inside (concave side) of the petals and sepals. There are two concave shapes created by the inner petals and outer sepals. Observe carefully where the darkest shadow occurs.

Step 4

With a pointed pencil, draw vein lines following the curvature. The fine lines might not be very visible when the drawing is finished, but they enhance its formation. By doing so, details and textures can be added as well.

Step 5

Add shadow on the outside (convex side) of petals and sepals. By separating the shading process on concave and convex parts, it becomes clear how forms affect light and shadow. Hence, the drawing will be more accurate and logical.

Step 6

Now refine the gradation of the shadows, refine the clean edges, and deepen the dark shadows. Using an eraser and a light touch, recover reflected light, then add any finishing touches.

I was skeptical because I''ve bought some highly touted books that turned out to be quite disappointing. And since it seems I''m one of the few so far who actually bought the book, the price was a bit daunting and way out of my normal price range. However considering you get paperback art books for less than half the pages the price isn''t really so out of line.

The book is what it claims - very detailed and going over a wide range of mediums and styles all dedicated to botanical art. This is NOT a casual art instruction book but I don''t think it''s too complicated. The pictures alone would provide plenty of inspiration. I also would recommend this to anyone seriously interested in botanical art - even if you are just starting out. I think this book will be a classic that a beginner will eventually want but then might have trouble finding. (I know there''s kindle but there is no guarantee of availability or at what price a few years from now). I also love that different artists contribute with different mediums highlighted. Some people like to focus on one medium (like watercolor) and use a variety of subjects. Others focus on the subject (flowers) and use a variety of mediums so this book offers a great deal if you "art" like that.

There are soooo many things to like, let me just mention one tiny thing that was omitted: there is no mention of brands except pan pastel. I think however this was a strategic decision. It is well known that Europeans prefer Fabercastell whereas USA colored pencils users lean toward wax based pencils such as prismacolor. I guess the omission of brands allows artists to concentrate more on the content of the subject matter. An experienced colored pencil artist can recognize some of the brands by the shape of the pencils.
Everything else about the book is over the top wonderful. This book is for serious artists. If you have never done this art, you can get a great foundation if you start at the beginning. If you have no materials at all, you could spend the first year doing just graphite.
As you see by the table of contents, many many techniques are explored here. For me with experience, I found there are still new areas for me to explore. The degree of detailed explanations is over the top! If your dream was to go to get a botanical art degree in an expensive college and you are stuck at home, this book will put you way ahead of the competition. The last book I reviewed, The Complete Book of Fruits and Vegetables is a wonderful coffee table book of exquisite watercolors, but there is no instruction. With this book, Botanical Art Techniques, you might be on your way to producing finished pieces as in the latter book.

Definitely "A Comprehensive Guide" to watercolor, graphite, colored pencil, vellum, pen & ink, egg tempera, oils, printmaking and more. Beautiful photographs inside (1,000!) and a plethora of art techniques for the aspiring, intermediate, or advanced botanical artist. This book is 100% worth the money. Treat yourself as I did ~ you won''t be disappointed.

We are living in the middle of the renaissance of botanical art. When I first started taking botanical art classes, there were less than a half dozen books on the subject. Most were written by NYBG teachers. I devoured them, I was hungry for any information to learn the beautiful art form I so long admired in botanical art prints. When I heard about the certificate program at NYBG, I enrolled while working as a realtor so it took me six years to complete. For years I bought every book I could get my hand on about the subject until my shelves now overflow. I vowed never to buy another book on botanical art. However, when I read about this book I had to have it because I know how important Robin Jess and Carol Woodin are to contemporary botanical art. It does not disappoint! It is an almanac of everything you ever wanted to know about botanical art in one volume. I will savor every page for years to come. It is a gift to all of us. My only regret is that it wasn’t published sooner as it is the only book you will ever need on botanical art.

Beautiful book, but please know it’s primarily a watercolor (only) book.
I was most interested in tips and insights for how to paint florals with acrylics and oils, which are noted as included in the book. They are, but of the 400 pages in the book, there are 9 total paragraphs on acrylic (2pages of text) & 9 paragraphs (1.5 pages) on oils.
I wished the write up was a little more transparent as I may have kept looking for another book more aligned.
It’s pretty, and I there are valid step by step tips in here so I will keep it, at minimum as a reference to experiment from or as a coffee table book.
